Food to Go Anacortes is a weekend backpack food program that started in our elementary schools in September 2015.  Our mission is to provide nutritious, supplemental meals and snacks for students who may experience food insecurity over the weekends, which can affect their health and ability to learn. Often these children rely heavily on free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch offered throughout the week at school. In 2017 we began to serve the middle and high schools students. Many of our older students prefer the anonymity of having meals delivered to their homes by volunteers.

Our volunteers pack and deliver bags to schools on Thursdays which then go home with the students on Fridays.  We provide about 200 students with food weekly during a regular school year. Our program is funded solely with generous donations from our community. One hundred percent of donations go to purchase food for students.

Weekly bags contains a minimum of the following:

-2 ready to eat meals (Cup Noodles etc)

          -1 shelf stable milk

          -2 shelf stable chocolate milks

          -2 cereal cups

-3-4 snacks (granola bars, trail mix, cheese crackers etc)

          -2 fresh fruits

--Each weekend food bag consists of at least the following: 2 ready-to-eat meals, 2 macaroni and cheese packages, 2 shelf-stable milks, 2 apples, 2-3 cereal containers, and 4-6 snacks, including nutritious granola bars, trail mix, cashew bags, and pretzels. Because of donations, we are often able to supplement the bag with additional food.

WhitneyandEvan2017D

Evan Rodriguez and Whitney Hogge have volunteered weekly during their 7th period on Thursdays during the 2016/17 school year. We have appreciated their help with delivery to the schools and food set up. Thank you for volunteering your time to help other students in our community!
